What is the Noto Flower Festival

The Noto Flower Festival has origins dating back 40 years, when the floral artists of the city gathered with their counterparts from Genzano, located in the Metropolitan City of Rome, where this fascinating painting technique was born. Since 1980, punctually on the third weekend of May, Noto, nicknamed the "Stone Garden" by Cesare Brandi, a renowned art historian, transforms its historic center into a riot of colors and scents. During this exceptional event, Via Corrado Nicolaci, with its 122 meters in length and 7 meters in width, is divided into 16 sectors of dimensions 6 by 4 meters each. The street literally becomes the canvas on which skilled artists draw with extreme care, using exclusively flowers, giving life to a majestic floral carpet covering an area of ​​approximately 700 square meters. The theme of the event, which varies annually, usually draws inspiration from elements related to religion, mythology, art, or local folklore.

Every year, local artists create sketches inspired by a specific theme. According to tradition, the sketch of the Noto coat of arms is made by the city's art institute and inaugurates the carpet. Extending over about 700 square meters, the carpet requires about 400, 000 flowers, including daisies, roses, carnations, and wildflowers collected in the netine countryside during the month of May.

According to tradition, the festival takes place on the third weekend of May, lasting several days, allowing visitors to admire the magnificent works and participate in various events. From Thursday night onwards, you can witness the creation of this wonderful floral carpet taking shape with a thousand petals and other plant materials, filling the path with previously outlined shapes.

Where

The Flower Festival will take place from May 17th to 21st, 2024, on Via Corrado Nicolaci in Noto, Sicily. This street, flanked by ancient baroque palaces, transforms into a unique floral artwork.

This year's theme is "Homage to Giacomo Puccini on his Centenary: the Master who lives in time and art."

A Flower Festival where flowers will be transformed into works inspired by the genius of Giacomo Puccini. A floral tribute to the melodies that have touched the hearts of millions. A vibrant and artistic tribute to the great composer.

Program

Friday, May 17th, in the afternoon, the winning artists of the floral panel design contest will receive one of the 16 sectors assigned to them on Via Corrado Nicolaci.

Subsequently, the artists will begin drawing the skeleton of their future work with special chalks.

On Saturday, May 18th, they will start covering the traced drawing with flowers specially cultivated for the event, until the painting is completed, often in the early hours of Sunday morning.

On Sunday, May 19th, the competition will begin, with locals and tourists waiting their turn to admire the wonderful mosaic of petals, until late at night.

On Monday and Tuesday, the influx of tourists will continue until Tuesday evening, when the withered flowers will be removed.

The Flower Festival will be set up on Friday, May 17th. It will be open for visitation from 09:00 on Saturday, May 18th, until Tuesday, May 21st.
